Leaving NYC...

We are up early but as you know the last day before you leave there is much to do and not forget. Sarah is packing today as I am mostly packed. We find in much more difficult packing for a road trip than when we fly. I have gotten Sarah use to the one carry on bag philosophy of packing light. However, now that the car is doing the hauling, we seem to keep adding more clothes and additional bags. Like a wagon train heading out west. Oh well, it is what it is....

The cloudy, grey day cannot curtail my excitement for this new adventure. I feel sad leaving Pearl and marvel at my attachment to her. I understand why Steinbeck traveled with his dog as across America. We get on the road about 12:30 as Sarah takes the first driving shift. We drive in three hour shifts. I find that amount of time just right when you want a break, stretch your legs and let the other person take over. The passenger handles the navigation and the IPod. We enjoy listening to downloaded podcasts from two guys called the Bowery Boys who talk about everything NYC, especially old New York its history and architecture. Our other favorite is the Intelligence Squared debates on various topics.

The trip is uneventful except for a long traffic delay due to a accident in Connecticut. We come upon Boston and there is something about the feel, the energy as you drive into the town line. Like a coiled spring of nervous energy the city looms ahead of us. The urban landscape of skyscrapers mixes with dull brick apartment housing giving the impression of a modern city living together with its rough and tumble past. We get a little lost entering the city but manage to make in and check into The Parker House.

The hotel Lobby

The bar of course..

The large room, well at least the king bed.
